Mixed lot (2 items), Indonesia, Sumatra, Batak: Pair of Karo-Batak ‘Padung-padung’ ear pendants. Made of silver. - Tribal Art

In the past the Karo-Batak women, north of Toba Lake in central Sumatra, wore such heavy ear pendants with double spiral ends, called ‘Padung-padung’. These were ‘threaded’ through pierced earlobes, but wearing ‘Padung-padung’ was additionally supported by the wearing of a large, folded headscarf! The present pair of Karo-Batak ‘Padung-padung’ ear pendants is old, was worn for a long time, and consists entirely of silver. Weight: 1.42 kg. Between the 19th and the early 20th centuries; H: each 16 cm. (ME)

Provenance: Belgian collection.

Literature: 'Batak' by Achim Sibeth, ill. 253, 254, 255.
