Indonesia, Borneo: A Dayak weaver’s shuttle, with typical relief decoration.
A tool made of wood, used for weaving: The yarn of the so-called ‘weft threads’ is wound in the interior of this object and the weaver ‘throws’ the entire shuttle alternately from the left or from the right through the separated ‘fans’ of the stretched warp threads. The lancet-shaped tip of the exterior of the weaving tool are dyed red brown and decorated with typical Dayak patterns (spikes, curves, volutes and leafy tendrils) in etched relief. A beautiful, practical utensil. First half of the 20th century; L: 61 cm. (ME)
