India, India-Burma border region: A ‘classic’ shawl for important men from Sema and Chang-Naga, made of local cotton sewn with 24 circles of pierced cowrie shells and a double row of cowries at the upper right edge (20 cm long). Woven in 3 panels. Black background with light-brown border stripes. Inwoven (insert-weaving) with small rectangles of red-coloured dog hair. These ‘classic’ shawls or body capes with old cowrie decorations, worn only by successful Naga warriors, are very rare today. With traces of usage. Dimensions: 160 x 90 cm. (ME)
