A West-Indian maharajah, clad in red robes, turban and ornaments, rides his white horse to a temple of the Hindu god Vishnu, accompanied by two servants. One of them holds a green sacred parasol over his master. A priest and two assistants await him near the temple; all three display the sign of the god Vishnu on their forehead. With a fire offering bowl, a bell, a shell trumpet and other objects. A string instrument, ‘vina’, placed on the altar is an attribute of the goddess Sarasvati. Painting on white ground, with sketched architectural elements. Two lines of Indian script in the upper section. A defect at the centre and on the upper right corner, minor tears. Inscription on the reverse. Rajasthan School. About 1900 to early 20th century; dimensions: 22 cm x 19th cm. (ME)
