India, miniature painting on paper: the goddess Sarasvati pays homage to the elephant-headed fortune god Ganesha.
In this sacred image, the Hindu goddess Sarasvati appears on the left, in lavish robes, on her ‘mount’, a goose. Sarasvati is the spouse of the god Brahma and the goddess of wisdom, knowledge, writing, dance, art and music. In this image, accompanied by a figure at the centre, she pays homage and brings sacrificial offerings to the elephant-headed fortune god Ganesha (right), the son of the god Shiva. Both deities are depicted with four arms. The page is not damaged, yet stained. On the blotchy verso three written lines are visible (upper left).
