A torso of hard, light-grey sandstone representing a male, Hindu deity, probably the god Shiva. With visible remains of an elaborate necklace. Clad with a skirt-like, short apron (‘sampot’) with vertical, pleated folds, held on the hips by means of a large belt with buckle. The ‘sampot’ is draped into a hanging, double ‘anchor motif’ on the front, and knotted into a decorative, quadrifoil rosette on the back. This section reveals visible traces of an early restoration. Overall, the execution is typical of the Bayon style from the region of Angkor Wat. Surface eroded from weathering and minor age damage (some pieces broken off). H: 75 cm, W: 40 cm. (ME)
Provenance: Austrian private collection.
Literature: 'Khmer Sculpture' by Madeleine Giteau, ill. 32, 41, p. 213, cat. 39.
