Luguru, Tanzania: A chief’s chair or throne.
Among the Luguru in East Tanzania these ‘stools’ with high rest carved in human shape are reserved for chiefs only. The present throne of a chief of the Luguru is made of a piece of hard, heavy wood, and coloured black and brown. The important, high back rest displays the abstract shape a woman: with breasts on the inside of the rest, and neck and head with high crested coiffure in the upper section. The round seat rests on three legs that are connected by rhombs on the left and right sides, and decorated with chip-carving motifs on the external side. Carefully crafted chip-carving decorations also embellish the back of the chief’s chair. A piece with good usage patina (see also the legs of the ‘throne’) and minor age damage: an old original repair on the seat (a glued tear). First half of the 20th century; H: 112 cm. (ME)
