A trough zither, called 'Inanga', made of brown, hard wood. Originally dyed black. A typical musical instrument of the tribes of East Tanzania. On the end of the handle sits a female figure with a detailed crested coiffure typical of sculptures of the Pare, Luguru or Zigua. The rectangular ‘trough’ of the instrument is slightly retracted on its long sides, it displays six holes in the upper and lower sections, through which strings were pulled, and two holes at the bottom for attaching a pumpkin calabash as resonating chamber on the back of the 'Inanga'. The musical instrument displays very good, old traces of usage and a partly black, encrusted patina. First half of the 20th century; L: 33 cm. (ME)
Literature: 'Africa. Musica y arte' by Elena Martinez-Jacquet & David Serra, ill. p. 78/79, fig. 34.
