Mbunda, Zambia, Angola: A ‘sanza’ (thumb piano), with mask face in relief.
A 'sanza' musical instrument (thumb piano) with a wooden soundbox, coloured in brown, with two holes, glued with black tree resin. Eight iron ‘tongues’ are attached to an iron frame. Glass pieces as ‘rattles’ inside. In the lower section on the front is a typical ‘Sachihongo mask' of the Mbunda carved in relief. In the initiation ceremonies of the Mbunda, 'Sachihongo' represents an old, powerful and wise chief. With geometrical and linear chip-carving patterns on the front and back. With carrying cord of twisted plant fibres. Good usage patina. First half of the 20th century; dimensions 20.5 x 13x 4 cm. (ME)
