A round, single-headed standing drum on four short legs, made of hard, heavy wood. The resonance body is under the pegs of the leather drum. On the front side of the drum a relief with an abstract depiction of the earth goddess 'Onile'. These drums, called ‘Agba’, were considered sacred objects. They received sacrificial offerings and were used only for ritual ceremonies. The present ‘Agba drum’ was originally coloured red and white. A interesting object with good usage patina and some age damage (tears). Early or first half of the 20th century; H: 54 cm. . (ME)

Provenance: German private collection. According to the consignor, the present ceremonial drum was purchased in the 1960s from the palace of the king (‘Oba’) of Abeokuta (Southwest Nigeria)
