Yoruba, Nigeria: A heavy, old 'money bracelet'.

Yoruba, Nigeria: A heavy, old 'money bracelet'. - Tribal Art

In the 16th century, the Portuguese introduced in West Africa small, round copper bars with thickened ends as a ‘form of currency’, the so-called ‘manillas’. Subsequently, valuable ‘money bracelets’ developed from this shape as ‘primitive money’ among the Yoruba, Nupe and others in Nigeria. The present object is a good example of this old, typical form of currency: made of yellow cast-alloy (brass), executed with ‘waste mould’ casting. Minor age damage (dents). 19th century to the first third of the 20th century; DM: c. 25 cm. Weight: 4.55 kg. (ME)
