Baule, Ivory Coast: ‘Kplekple’ mask from the dance cycle pertaining to the buffalo god Goli. - Tribal Art

A mask, called 'kplekple', representing the buffalo god Goli (for a more detailed explanation see cat. no. 41). Made of wood, with round mask face, originally dyed red (= ‘male type’ of the mask pair, ‘female’ = black). In the upper section black antelope horns with remains of white colouring. The protruding eyes, their outline as well as the open mouth with teeth are coloured in white. With good, old usage patina, as well as minor age damage on the edge and to the bottom (small pieces broken off). With ‘bite bar’ on the back. First half of the 20th century. H: 55 cm. (ME)
