This round, or almost round, mask type of the Baule people, called ‘moon mask’, symbolises natural phenomena such as the moon and the setting sun. These masks make their appearance at the beginning of the grand mask dances of the Baule people. The present, unusual 'moon mask' is made of light, heavy wood, and dyed black in the front. With a finely manufactured plaited coiffure, round eyes, a small mouth and typical tribal scarification marks. With very good usage patina on both the outside and the inside, with only minor age damage. First half of the 20th century; H: 30 cm. (ME)
