Guro, Ivory Coast: A very beautiful, old mask of the ‘Gu’ type. - Tribal Art

A very old mask of the Guro people. Carved in light-coloured wood, dyed black. With scarification marks, a plaited coiffure in the form of ram horns and a jagged border on both sides. The ‘Gu’ mask type depicts a beautiful woman and is regarded as the wife of the animal shaped forest spirit ‘Zamble’. A piece with magnificent usage patina in the front and on the back (on the inside) as well as with age damage (some pieces broken off on the edge, at the back of the hair, minor tears). Between c. 1900 and the first third of the 20th century; H: 33.5 cm. (ME)
