A very beautiful, old ape mask of the Dan, of the ‘Kagle’ type, also called ‘angular chimpanzee mask’. Originally carved in light brown hardwood and dyed black on the front side. The 'Kagle mask' carries an iron hook at the crown, above the large protruding forehead. It has deep-set, triangular eyes, a large, curved nose and semicircular protruding 'cheeks'. Both 'cheeks' display a carved relief band on the outer side. The large, protruding chimpanzee mouth is open and has a 'beard' of wooden pegs inserted in the upper and lower sections. A row of similar pegs also decorates the forehead. This 'Kagle mask' is a very beautiful old piece, with excellent usage patina on the outside and especially on the inside. With some charming, old original repairs by means of copper clamps. Between c. 1900 and the first third of the 20th century; H: 21.5 cm. (ME)
Provenance: Private collection Comte Simon du Chastel, Brussels. (ME)
Literature: 'Die Kunst der Dan' by Eberhard Fischer & Hans Himmelheber, Rietberg Museum Zurich, ill. 78, 79, 80 et al.
