A very beautiful, old ape mask of the Dan, of the ‘Kagle’ type, also called ‘angular chimpanzee mask’. Originally carved in light brown hardwood and dyed black on the front side. The 'Kagle mask' carries an iron hook at the crown, above the large protruding forehead. It has deep-set, triangular eyes, a large, curved nose and semicircular protruding 'cheeks'. Both 'cheeks' display a carved relief band on the outer side. The large, protruding chimpanzee mouth is open and has a 'beard' of wooden pegs inserted in the upper and lower sections.
