Lot No. 19

Dan, Ivory Coast, Liberia: An extremely beautiful old ‘Deangle mask’ of the Dan.

Dan, Ivory Coast, Liberia: An extremely beautiful old ‘Deangle mask’ of the Dan. - Tribal Art

Made of light-coloured, light wood, the face section dyed black at the front. Elliptic, with outlined, slit eyes, small nose and open, protruding mouth. The free surfaces of the forehead, cheeks and chin are decorated with a fine, delicate pattern of scarification marks (hence this piece can be probably attributed to the subgroup of the ‘Dan Mano’). With an old, original black-dyed hairstyle made of braided plant fibres. This mask displays a beautiful, black shiny patina on the front side, and a visible, very old, smooth usage patina at the back on the inside. Minor age-related damage (small pieces of the eyes and mouth broken off, a minor tear to the lower rim at the back). The wearers of so-called ‘Deangle’ masks of the Dan are in charge of looking after and taking care of the young initiates in the isolated bush camp. Between ca. 1900 and the first third of the 20th century. H: 21.5 cm. (ME)

Provenance: Austrian private collection.

Literature: 'Die Kunst der Dan' by Fischer & Himmelheber, Rietberg Museum, Zurich, pp. 41 to 53, with numerous illustrations.
