Senufo, Ivory Coast, Mali Burkina Faso: A ‘Sejen bird’ with two small birds on its wings.
Before their initiation in the important Poro society and before sowing, the young men of the Senufo people must take part in an agricultural competition: the winner is the person who can best turn over the soil with a rake and thus prepare the field for sowing. During the competition, a wooden rod with a sitting female figure, called ‘Tefalipitya’, stands in front of the hard working young men. This rod is the prize for the winner. At the other side of the field, behind the workers, a ‘Sejen bird’ atop a long rod observes and controls them. The present ‘Sejen bird’ is made of wood, dyed black, and carries two small birds (its 'children') on its open wings. All three birds feature zigzag lines in chip-carving relief on their wings, in the upper and lower sections. The birds represent a ‘Calao’ (hornbill), the ‘sacred bird’ of the Senufo people. Good patina, minor age-related damage (edges and colours scuffed). First half of the 20th century; L: 40 cm, W: 32 cm (large bird). (ME)
