Lot No. 296

Günther Uecker *

Günther Uecker * - Contemporary Art I

(born in Wendorf in 1930)
Nagelkreuz hell, 2017, signed Uecker, bronze with white patina, Ex. EA (aside from edition of 35 numbered examples), 45 x 41 x 14 cm, cast by Schmäke Düsseldorf, edited by Galerie Geuer & Geuer, Düsseldorf in cooperation with “BILD” newspaper

Provenance:
Private Ownership, Germany

Uecker’s treatment of the topic of pain in his work is exemplarily expressed by the use of the cross to represent human injury. Günther Uecker was inspired to make this piece by the reformer Martin Luther, who nailed his theses to the Castle Church of Wittenberg 500 years ago. The surface of the bronze has been treated in a striking way: the materiality of the texture of the wood, the nails and, above all, the cloth wrapped around the wooden cross has been faithfully reproduced.
