Bargello embroidery, - Oriental Carpets, Textiles and Tapestries

Tuscany (Italy), c. 91 x 133 cm, 18th century, in this type of embroidery, also known as “Florentine”, stitches are stepped by two to five cross threads creating the classic zig-zag/curved patterns, the Florentine Museum “Museo Nazionale del Bargello” preserves the oldest existing specimen manufactured with this technique and dating back to the 16th century, the present fragment with wool ground and wool and cotton stitches was formerly used as a bedspread, additionally mounted on linen and wooden panel.
