Chinese embroidery,


China, c. 61 x 11 cm, 17th/18th century, extremely rare textile on silk ground with embroidered cotton, silk thread as well as cotton thread covered with gold leaf in appliqué technique, similar pieces were probably used in former times as a sacred standard in a monastery in West China, the following two pieces are identical and decorated with four main motifs, depicted from top to bottom are a phoenix, a foo dog, a four-clawed dragon and the mountain/wave symbol with a bat, the green areas are manufactured with silk, some contours are traced with undyed cotton - all other patterns are made with pressed golden wire, unusual crenellated border with pointed arrows, no significant signs of wear in the pattern, edge and end damage in the embroidery ground.
