The Post-Impressionist, Gustave Loiseau painted landscape and architectural motifs in the rain, fog, snow and sunshine in his own particular style in an Impressionist manner. The changes he witnessed in these repeating scenes at different times of the day and year fascinated the artist. His pictures are often constructed using only a few colours, as is, indeed, the case with Le Port Henri IV with the blue tones predominating. He placed a key emphasis in his landscape and street scenes on the effects of light on the surface of water and on buildings. For centuries, Port Henri in the 4th arrondissement in Paris had been a popular motif for Parisian artists.
