Klemens Brosch - Modern Art

(Linz 1894–1926) Birds in the wind, circa 1925, oil on cardboard, 25 x 28 cm, framed, (K)

Provenance: Private Ownership Salzburg

‘He (Brosch) was praised to the heavens as a wunderkind for his naturalistic formalism in the provincial milieu of his home city; the authority of the then completely mediocre Academy served to strengthen and revive this rush to judgment... Brosch expected great success but nothing came of it. He was a stranger in his own lifetime, escaping into the fleeting illusions of drugs and ultimately into the eternal release of death... Klemens Brosch appeared to me to be a fragmentary genius, a product of his environment and simultaneously a sacrifice to it.’ Herbert Lange, ‘Ein Künstler von ‘fragmentarischer Genialität’, Öberösterr.
