His years of military service brought new points of departure in Boeckl’s life, but also in his artistic output. In May 1915 he joined the artillery on the Italian front near Malborghet in the Val Canale, being conscripted as a forward observation officer, and later stationed there as an adjutant. During the period 1916/17, he executed works with a military subject matter based on local military encounters. The works that survive from this period are largely prints and drawings.
