“Until four years ago I did everything I could in order to create good paintings from real life. Then doubts came up. Doubting is not a sign of weakness, it implies strength. [...] I have now become convinced that I - just as many other painters still do - was producing a type of painting that is old-fashioned, passé, not in keeping with our time and against the real nature of painting, which is not to imitate. Painting is the art of freely-conceived colours and forms, it is also a wilful act of creation and, unlike architecture, it is an irrational art, where creativity and imagination predominate.”
(Osvaldo Licini, 1935)
