(born Poland in 1972) Untitled (Airplanes), on the stretcher signed, dated Wilhelm Sasnal 2001, acrylic on canvas, 49 x 59.5 cm, framed, (PS)
Provenance: Galerie Foksal, Warschau
“Wilhelm Sasnal has developed an exceptional body of work over the past two decades, one which considers the question of timeliness and the prospects for painting as it relates to contemporary visual language.
In an age in which our senses are overloaded with photographic images, Sasnal’s paintings subtly explore the role of “picture maker”, thus providing evidence of the fascination with painting, one as true now as ever before. His paintings draw their great strength from their ability to seduce the observer, making them pause and pay greater attention to an object which, at first glance, appears inconsequential. For Sasnal painting is far more a means of saving important images from the visual flood, ones which would otherwise be abandoned to oblivion. The process of selecting and painting these pictures follows a deliberate decision by the artist to give the subject an outstanding cultural meaning.” (Brochure to accompany the Wilhelm Sasnal exhibition 03.02–13.05.2012, Haus der Kunst Munich, 2012, as above)
