Giuseppe Bernardino Bison

Giuseppe Bernardino Bison - Old Master Paintings

(Palmanova 1762–1844 Milan)
The Canal Grande in Venice,
oil on canvas, 47 x 75.5 cm, framed

We are grateful to Fabrizio Magani for confirming the attribution of the present painting (written communication).

Bison was heavily influenced by the Venetian masters of the 18th century, such as Marco Ricci, Marieschi, Guardi and Canaletto. This is also visible in the present composition, which is based on Canaletto’s work.
Magani dates the present painting to Bison’s late Milanese period. In these later works, Bison emphasized the medium of oil painting rather than tempera and concentrated on Venetian pictorial themes such as the Canal Grande with Snow (cf. F. Magani, Giuseppe Bernardino Bison, Soncino 1993, p. 34, ill. 20). Two Venetian subjects were included in the annual exhibition in the Milanese Brera, as well as Bucintoro’s Exit from the Palazzo Ducale (cf. Guida critica dell´Esposizione delle Belle Arti in Brera scritta dal pittore Giuseppe Elena, Milan 1842). These themes were executed in a nostalgic painting style and carried over the vedutismo or landscape painting to the 19th century.
