This painting is a vivid example of the successful collaboration between two artists. Johann Georg de Hamilton was considered to be one of the most talented animal painters of his generation, whilst Auerbach enjoyed great success at the Viennese court as a portraitist. A comparable equestrian portrait of Charles VI, also by Hamilton and Auerbach can be found in the Brukenthal Museum in Sibiu (Hermannstadt).
