We are grateful to Claudia Salvi, Paris, for confirming this painting as a work by Jean Michel Picart (written communication of 29 January 2013). She attributes the picture to the painter’s mature phase and compares it with a still life in the Saint-Etienne Museum and with another one in the Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge.
In 1625 Jean Michel Picart left his hometown of Antwerp and moved to Paris, where he worked as a painter and art dealer. In 1640 he became a member of the Guild of Saint Luke. King Louis XIV appointed him court painter in 1671, 1679 and 1682.
