Vincenzo Damini and Giovanni Antonio Pellegrini

Vincenzo Damini and Giovanni Antonio Pellegrini - Old Master Paintings

Vincenzo Damini (Venice end of the 17th century-1749 L’Aquila) and
Giovanni Antonio Pellegrini (Venice 1675-1741)
The Gods of Olympus,
oil on canvas, shaped top, 165 x 94 cm, framed

Provenance:
Brouwershuis Collection. Vervloet, Armex, Groenplaats, Antwerp;
Baron de Borrekens Collection, Antwerp;
Bailly-Pommery auction, Voutie Associés, Paris, 15 December 2004, lot 102 (as Giovanni Antonio Pellegrini)

Vincenzo Damini was a student of Giovanni Antonio Pellegrini, who accompanied him to England in 1720. His compositions demonstrate the same decorative ease as those of his master. In 1730 Damini returned to Venice and Bologna, before settling in the Abruzzo region. George Knox, however, believes that the present painting is an authentic work by Pellegrini (written communication June 2004). According to Knox, it is linked to the painting of Juno, Ceres, Pluto with Cerberus, Cupid and the Scheldt, which was commissioned in 1716 for the Brouwershuis in Antwerp (cf. G. Knox, Antonio Pellegrini, 1675–1741, Oxford 1995, 196, 197).
