Wouter Knijff produced landscapes that reveal the influence of Jan van Goyen or Salomon van Ruysdael. Buildings, such as the city gate in the present painting, were typographically accurate in their depictions. Many of Knijff’s works were later attributed to Jan van Goyen by altering the monogram.
