Dirk Dalens the Elder - a pair (2)

Dirk Dalens the Elder - a pair (2) - Old Master Paintings

(Dordrecht 1600–1676)
Pair of southern landscapes with two scenes from Ovid’s Metamorphoses: Diana discovers the pregnancy of Callisto, and Diana and Actaeon,
both signed: D. Dalens f.,
oil on panel, each 60 x 90 cm, framed
a pair (2)

Dirk Dalens trained in the workshop of Moses van Uyttenbroecks. Until 1627 he lived in The Hague, where in 1632 he was accepted into the Guild of St Luke. The courtiers evidently prized his works, as in 1648 a payment of 1200 guilders was given for “chimney pieces” at Noordeinde Palace. As an esteemed painter, he was one of the founders of the “Confrerie Pictura” in The Hague. With this present pair of paintings, to date unpublished and confirmed by the signature, Dalens proved himself a sensitive landscape painter. The architechtural setting in the style of classical antiquity as well as the subject derived from Ovid, testify to his affinity for Uyttenbroeck and the Pre-Rembrandtists.
