(Antwerp 1627–1689)
Still life with cooked lobster, oysters and fruit,
signed upper right: A. Coosemans f.,
oil on canvas, 60 x 78 cm, framed
The present banquet still life is in the tradition of Jan Davidsz. de Heem, in whose Antwerp workshop Alexander Coosemans received his training in 1641. Characteristic is the balanced pictorial composition meticulously arranged towards the background. Draped on a silky shining cloth lies at the centre of the painting a magnificent lobster. In front of it is a silver bowl with fruits, next to it, on bare wood, some plums. Between the grapes and the vine leaves stand out a beer tankard and, next to the turquoise-coloured glazed ewer, a slender drinking glass. Both the colours and the surfaces create impressive tensions: the lobster’s smooth skeleton with its strong orange-red and the wrinkled citrus fruits in shining yellow contrast with the partly withered, finely-veined grey foliage.
