Lot No. 766

Ernst Stuven

(Hamburg c. 1660–1712 Rotterdam)
Still life of fruit with a lemon, figs and grapes,
signed lower right: E. Stuven,
oil on canvas, 50 x 41 cm, framed

This signed painting by Stuven displays his great affinity with Willem van Aelst. The demand for small-format still lifes emerged in the second half of the 17th century in contrast with the opulent still lifes hitherto predominant on the art market of the Netherlands as a result of a taste increasingly dictated by France. Stuven came to Amsterdam at the age of eighteen and became a pupil of Johannes Voorhout. He later joined the studios of Willem van Aelst and Abraham Mignon. As a master he trained such painters as Elias van den Broeck, Willem Grasdorp, Herman van der Mijn and J. W. Windtraken. Comparable works by Stuven are preserved at the Kunsthalle in Hamburg and formerly at the gallery Johnny van Haeften Ltd., London. A very similar still life was auctioned at Dorotheum, Vienna, on 06.10.1999 as lot 352 (RKD Number 60819).
