Portrait of a musician, possibly Luca Marenzio,
oil on panel, 45 x 34 cm, framed
A tentative identification of the sitter with Luca Marenzio (1553? – 1599), Italian composer and singer of the late Renaissance, has been suggested by professor Claudio Strinati, who believes the painting to be by Bartolomeo Passerotti. Marenzio was one of the most renowned composers of madrigals, and wrote some of the most famous examples of the form in its late stage of development, prior to its early Baroque transformation by Monteverdi. He worked in the service of several aristocratic Italian families, including the Gonzaga, Este, and Medici, and spent most of his career in Rome. According to Professor Marco Bizzarini and Dr Antonio Addamiano, the sitter should be identified as a “virtuoso” of the “lira da braccio” with seven strings, rather than a composer such as Luca Marenzio, usually depicted with a musical score.
