Jurian van Streeck

Jurian van Streeck - Old Master Paintings

(Arnemuiden 1632–1687 Amsterdam)
Still life with a nautilus goblet, a Chinese vase and a Wanli bowl, with half a lemon and other citrus fruits,
lower left remains of a signature: J St...,
oil on canvas, 51 x 42 cm, framed
Fred Meijer confirmed that the present painting is a work by Juriaan van Streek on the basis of a photograph.

Provenance:
Belgian private collection

Jurian van Streeck’s still lifes are indebted to Willem Kalf’s work. Like him, van Streeck produced banquet scenes with a few precious objects, with goblets, pitchers and bowls, but also with fruits, against a dark background. In the “Lexikon der Holländischen Stilllebenmaler im 17. Jahrhundert” the works of both artists are compared: “Whilst van Streeck uses the shadowy darkness as a background for the illuminated objects, making the light the main source of plasticity, Kalf instills life into his omnipresent spacial darkness by means of sparkling light effects that underline the material of surfaces and the spatial atmosphere instead of the objects’ plasticity ...”. Around 1680 Streek gave up painting and became an innkeeper.
