(Antwerp 1630–1696)
Portrait of an officer with a truncheon, in the background a cavalry engagement before a besieged city,
oil on canvas, 136 x 111 cm, framed
Jacob Huysmans came to England around 1660. He quickly became one of the most popular portrait painters in King Charles II’s court. He probably received his most important commissions from Stuart Princess Katharina von Braganza, the wife of the future King James II. In the present portrait Huymans employed one of his frequently-used compositional schemes. Characteristic is the slitted sleeve with broad gold stripes, under which the shirt is visible (cf. Huyman’s portrait of Cornett Joyce, auctioned by Sotheby’s, London, on 29 October 2009 as lot 35, and the portrait of William Legge in the National Portrait Gallery, London).
