The signed pendant to the present still life was auctioned on 30 January 2013 by Sotheby’s New York as lot 30. For similar compositions by Henstenburgh, cf. A. M. Zaal, Herman Henstenburgh 1667-1726, doctoral dissertation, Amsterdam 1991, no. A006, A033 und A041. In his apprenticeship with Johannes Bronckhorst, Hestenburgh learned not only watercolour technique, but also the honourable craft of the pie baker. His oeuvre comprises exclusively watercolour and gouache on parchment, predominantly vanitas motifs and landscapes. Thieme-Becker writes about him “Hengstenburgh (sic) painted in very vivid colours and with great realism, mostly on dark ground.”
