Lot No. 678

Antwerp School, Late 16th Century

Wooded landscape with hunters on a rabbit hunt,
oil on canvas, 51 x 67 cm, framed

Several attributions have been suggested for the present painting. Thomas DaCosta Kaufmann indicated in July 2013 that it could be a work by Hans Bol (1534-1593). He referred to several paintings by Bol for comparison. Nonetheless, DaCosta Kaufmann suggested a careful attribution to the circle of Bol, of whom only few paintings have been preserved. For the authorship of this painting, Hendrick Bergaigne, a student of Momper’s, would probably come into consideration. The RKD, The Hague, holds a photo of a painting (no. 104233) by Bergaigne, which in the composition, the treatment of the foliage, the painting and the coloration closely resemble the present painting.
