The Dragon Kills the Companions of Kadmos,
oil on copper, 16.2 x 22 cm, unframed
The present painting echos the large-sized work of Cornelis van Haarlem (1588), which is located in the National Gallery, London. Hendrick Goltzius created a copper plate engraving based on this painting. Depicted is a scene from Ovid’s Metamorphoses (III, 1-151). Two companions of Cadmus were killed by a dragon that guards the spring of Ares. Cadmus managed to slay the dragon, after which its teeth grew from the ground as “dragon seeds”.
