Aeneas carrying his father Anchises away from the burning town of Troy,
oil on canvas, 50 x 75 cm, framed
We are grateful to Dr Ursula Härting, who has identified the painting as a work of Caullery’s. Portions of the background could have been completed by the workshop. A comprehensive certificate is available.
Painter Louis de Caullery, who can be associated with the circle of Frans Fracken II, was probably born in Caullery, near Cambrai. Around 1594 he was already an apprentice in the workshop of Joost de Momper. He primarily produced gallant scenes with depictions of banquets and feasts, which frequently had allegorical meaning. He also painted urban landscapes with views of Rome and Venice. Caullery personally executed the foreground in its entirety, whilst Dr Härting suspects the cooperation of the workshop for the urban backdrop. A very similar view of Caullery’s, of an almost identical size, is located in the Gemäldegalerie in Kassel (inv. no. GK 936).
