(Beauvais 1521-1599 Paris)
Bloodbath of the Triumvirate,
oil on panel, 86 x 149 cm, framed
The present work displays a variation on the same theme as a signed painting by Caron in the Louvre, which is dated 1566. Caron was active together with Nicolò dell’Abate and Primaticcio in Fontainebleau where he worked for Henry II between 1540 and 1550. His paintings are marked by the depiction of numerous graceful figures in spacious rooms with extraordinary architectural fragments from an exaggerated perspective. Rendered in light colours, his works have a distinct dream-like atmosphere and fine quality.
After Caesar’s death, three men joined together and ultimately succeeded even in attaining legislative power as a “triumvirate” in 43 BC: Mark Antony, a general of Caesar’s, Octavian, a grandson of Caesar’s sister, whom Caesar adopted in his will for lack of a legitimate son, a certain Lepidus, who would soon barely play a role. The triumvirate took vengeance upon Caesar’s murderers and upon all those who stood in their way.
