Thomas Wyck - Old Master Paintings

(Bewerwyk 1616–1677 Haarlem)
A seamstress in an interior,
signed lower centre: TWijck,
oil on canvas, 40 x 33.5 cm, framed

Provenance:
with Schmidt, Paris;
with Galerie Sankt-Lucas, Vienna, cat. 1962, lot 6, illustrated;
Anonymous sale, Phillips, London, 10 April 1990, lot 42;
with Johnny van Haeften, London;
with Richard Green, London;
Belgian private collection

The pensive seamstress in the present work appears to be preoccupied with the thoughts of a departed or lost love. The birdcage included at the top left of this work is a pictorial representation of confinement and isolation, which the girl represents.

Thomas Wyck specialised in creating such works in which a solitary man or woman is depicted in an interior. Within the artist’s oeuvre, this work is comparable to the Lady at the Spinning Wheel in the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam, and a similar interior can be seen in An Alchemist in his Study sold at Christie’s New York, 26 January 2005, lot 249.
