Floris van Schooten became Dean of the Guild of Saint Luke in Haarlem in 1639. He is noted for his early pictures of market and kitchen scenes, and images of ontbijtjes (breakfast still lifes). The present work is however a more austere composition which focuses on the metallic surfaces of the pots arranged around the centrally placed candlestick. This may reflect the influence of Pieter Claesz or Willem Heda.
