(Siena? 1505/15–1571) The Holy Family, oil on panel, 77 x 62 cm, framed Provenance: Marchesi Honorati collection, Jesi; European private collection We are grateful to Marco Ciampolini for confirming the attribution on the basis of a photograph. According to Marco Ciampolini, the present painting is a characteristic work by Bartolomeo Neroni dating from the mid-16th century. It is closely related to a painting by the artist in the Pinacoteca Senese (inv. no. 572). Bartolomeo Neroni was a student of Sodoma, whose daughter he married, and was also influenced by Beccafumi. From 1549 onwards, the impact of his father-in-law’s art gradually diminished. Neroni was primarily active in Siena, where his frescoes in the cloister of Monte Olivieto Maggiore attest to his great artistic mastership. His late work was essentially dependent on Bronzino, such as the Madonna della Misericordia in the church of Fontegiusta.
