Jean-Adolphe Beauce

Jean-Adolphe Beauce - 19th Century Paintings

(Paris 1818–1875 Boulogne-Billancourt) French Troops Landing in Beirut, signed, dated J. A. Beauce 1862, oil on canvas, 65 x 115.5 cm, framed, (GG)

The present work depicts French troops landing in Beirut. In 1860 Napoleon III sent a 6,000 man strong French expedition to Beirut to protect the Christians there, and to end the massacre which had already caused 10,000 casualities. The French mission was to maintain peace between the religious communities and, in doing so, France assumed the role of protector to Christians in the Ottoman Empire. The expedition was led by General Charles-Marie-Napoleon de Beaufort d’Hautpoul and landed in Beirut on 16 August 1860. The painting shows the General on a grey horse, surrounded by drummers and trumpeters, as he is greeted with his troops by the local citizens. Another version of this painting can be found in the Museum of the History of France at Versailles.
