Lot No. 92

A c. 1900 X-Ray photograph,

A c. 1900 X-Ray photograph, - Tribal Art

probably Vienna, original gelatin silver print in large size, depicting a Human Skull. Size c. 29,5 x 38,6 cm. (WU).

“Curiosity is one of the most permanent and certain characteristics of a vigorous intellect. “
Samuel Johnson

Leonardo da Vinci made many drawings about the structural integrity of the skull, the architectonic dome that is perfectly made to protect our brains. His contemporaries were more interested in what happened inside our minds. How do we communicate, rationalise, and imagine? We are divine creators in our own cranial cavity, because in our imagination we can create whole new worlds.

For most tribes, the skull is just a communication device, like fetishes it is just an empty vessel waiting to be filled and charged. When it is full of magic through sorcerers, shamans or Nganga-feticheurs, it can be used to communicate with other worlds.
