An early Montol, classic.
Reference Prof. Herbert Cole: Montol figure, some small damage on right arm, 46 cm high. The Montol are a small (near the Goemai, Kantera, and Kulere) Benue Valley ethnic group living north of the river and northwest of the larger Mumuye populations. All these groups share a schematic, simplified style of human rendering, with naturalism recalled only in the main body parts, their locations and proportions. Like similat Montol figures it may have been housed in an oracular shrine of the Komtin cult where it was believed to dispense judgements. In earlier times these shrines were repositories of trophy skulls (Berns et al 2011: 282).
