French School, 18th century
The Ascension of Christ, oil on canvas, 90 x 67 cm framed
As is suggested by the present painting’s style, the artist was very much under the influence of Jean Jouvenet and Hyacinthe Rigaud. It is comparable to Collin de Vermont’s Mercury Entrusting Bacchus to the Nymphs on Mount Nysa and King Darius Wedding His Daughter to Cyrus (both Musée des Beaux-Arts, Tours). We are grateful to Emilio Negro for suggesting the attribution to Hyacinthe Collin de Vermont (Versailles 1693-1761 Paris).
