Literature: T. H. Fokker, Jan Siberechts, Peintre de la Paysanne Flamande, Brussels 1931, p. 83, pl. 37.

Walther Bernt writes about Jan Siberechts: "Flemish landscape and animal painter. In character, his early works are close to those by the Italianate Dutchmen N. Berchem, J. Both, and K. Dujardin. Later on he painted Flemish landscapes with faithfully observed detail. Large peasant women are on their way to the market with their full carts and cattle, marching along flooded paths or through fords. All their movements and the sprays of water are rendered most realistically and vibrantly. A silvery light wraps around the flimsy foliage or is reflected in the shallow water. Blue and red garments, shining yellow brass containers, and spotted cows and horses are set off against the greenish grey tones of the landscape…".
