(Lodi before 1700-after 1716), Two still lifes of grapes, oil on canvas, each 73 x 59 cm, framed,
Gillardo da Lodi is one of the Italian still life painters who were only recently rediscovered by scholars. It was only in 1964 that four photographs of still lifes signed "del pittore Gilardi lodigiano 1716" were unearthed in the archives of Carlo Volpe, so that it was possible to assign this anonymous group of pictures to said artist. Gianluca Bocchi subsequently managed to compile a first catalogue of works by the artist. Grapes like those shown in the two present compositions, which radiate a great charm, were a preferred subject of the artist’s still lifes, which he painted for palaces and villas in Lombardy.
